Governors‘ Camp Walking Safaris Mara, Kenia

Leave your vehicle behind and take a walking safari with one of our experienced and qualified naturalists for the true thrill of the bush. Down on the same level as the animals you will experience the untamed beauty of the Mara. Our walking safaris take place in a private concession area adjacent to the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The scenery here very much differs from the Masai Mara. Picturesque acacia trees characterise the hilly landscape you can enjoy walking through either in the morning or afternoon. The walk takes approx. 1½ to 2 hours.

You will track game, unsure what waits round the next corner, giraffe, buffalo, hyena, zebra or even lion. You will catch the scents and sounds of the wild Africa. And at the end of it all waits a sumptuous bush barbecue breakfast complete with champagne. Your drive back to the camp again is a game drive through the Masai Mara. Afternoon walking safaris are finished with sundowner drinks and canapés.

Participants in a walking safari should be in good health and be reasonably fit and active. There is no path as such and some parts of the walk lead through hilly and rocky areas. Children under 10 years are, for safety reasons, not allowed to participate in walking safaris.

Governors‘ Camp Balloon Safaris Mara, Kenya

For the adventure of a lifetime we offer the unique experience of a Balloon Safari over the plains, forest and river of the Masai Mara Game Reserve, famous for its abundance of wildlife throughout the year. Lions, Elephants, Buffalo, Hippos, Crocodiles and prolific numbers of plains game are regularly seen, as are the countless species of Birds both in flight and atop their lofty perches in the trees. The annual migration of the Wildebeest from July to October is a sight that, viewed from the vantage point of a Balloon, is never to be forgotten. Departure is from Little Governors’ Camp, which has a perfect natural launch site and offers easy access for the take off shortly after sunrise. The flight lasts about an hour, with ample opportunities for photography and video filming from this unusual and often exciting perspective. After landing there is a traditional champagne toast, followed by a breakfast cooked on the Balloon burners in the middle of the rolling plains of the Masai Mara. It is another tradition with us that each passenger is presented with a certificate signed by the pilot to commemorate the flight. The Balloon Safari ends with a leisurely game drive which often allows you to return to the animals seen from the air before our vehicles return you to your camp. There are no special requirements for participation in a Balloon Safari

GOVERNORS‘ CAMP Masai Mara, Kenya

Location

Located on the banks of the Mara River, Masai Mara, Kenya (open throughout the year)

Camp description:

Governors’ Camp is situated on the banks of the Mara River in the west of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Created in 1972, it set new standards in luxury as a tented camp, putting particular emphasis on comfort and service, complimented by the sort of good food, which would have been impossible in the bygone days of the grand safari. Maintaining these unique qualities as a tradition, the camp has been refined and improved through the years.

We have taken special care to preserve an atmosphere in which today’s traveller can share the same elemental landscape that inspired Hemingway and magnetised adventurers the world over. The site and size of a safari camp is critical to its vitality.

Governors’ Camp, with its 37 tents set amongst the trees along the Mara river, also has unrivalled views over the plains and is visited and re-visited by guests who find its continued excellence, personal style and family feeling quietly reassuring.

Facilities

All guest facilities are under canvas and keep the authentic, traditional safari atmosphere. All guest tents have en-suite bathrooms with shower and basin, running cold and hot water as well as a flush toilet. Gas and paraffin lamps are used for lighting.

Our privately located Justus Suite is perfect for honeymoon couples, as is tent 37 which has incredible views over the Mara plains and its wildlife.

The dining tent, our campfire and the bar tent are the centre of the camp. Next to the reception is a small souvenir shop. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style, alfresco. Dinner is served in the dining tent. For dinner the menu offers a choice of four courses, including a choice of main courses.

A traditional campfire is lit at sunset every evening and after dinner clients enjoy sitting around the campfire, reminiscing about their safari in its evocative light.

Activities and Excursions

The Masai Mara is a unique area with a constant and unrivalled flow of wildlife throughout the year. From July to October the Mara becomes a backdrop for one of the last great natural wonders of the world, when 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra surge up from the Serengeti plains in their annual search for the seasonal grasses that sustain them. The spectacle as the vast herds cross rivers and sweep through the golden grasses, is punctuated by individual struggles with the predators, which are in turn drawn to take their part in this dramatic event. Whilst the migration is spectacular, game viewing at all other times of the year remains almost unrivalled anywhere in Africa.

There are various activities on offer: game viewing excursions in open Landrovers, game walks or balloon flights over the wide plains of the Masai Mara. Day excursions to the Lake Victoria are also on offer.

Important Information

However, we recommend booking these excursions well in advance and combining the Lake Victoria trip with an overnight stay. All meals, three game viewing excursions daily as well as laundry is included in our price. Park entrance fees, drinks as well as other activities (such as walking, ballooning, Lake Victoria excursion, a visit to a Masai village) are to be paid separately. Please let us know special dietary requirements in advance. Please note: Luggage restriction of 15 kg on all domestic flights. Extra luggage can be left at your base hotel in Nairobi. Safari arrangements and bookings can be made through your local ground-handling agent or directly with Governors’ Camp.

The Mukutan Retreat Laikipia, Kuki Gallmann, Kenya

Ol Ari Nyiro is a 100,000-acre (150 square mile) private paradise, wildlife and ecological conservation reserve in Laikipia, Kenya. It is home to Kuki Gallmann, best selling author of I Dreamed Of Africa, an autobiographical story of love and death set against the dramatic backdrop of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. The story that has developed there has already made it to millions a symbol of survival, healing and hope. This unique sanctuary has kept intact the mystique of the Africa that has brought generations of travellers to the Cradle of Mankind. “Suddenly, the undergrowth clears and we are confronted by a scene of startling magic: a sole acacia tree, its branches as gnarled and twisted as the limbs of an old woman, silhouetted in the burnt-orange sunlight against a vivid purple sky. Behind the tree, a sheer 3,000-feet drop; beyond, a view that seems to stretch on forever. ‘This is the end of the world, the beginning of the world, the roof of the world,’ whispers Kuki. ‘This is where we all began.’” Tatler, Sep 1999 Ol Ari Nyiro is an oasis of breathtaking beauty renowned for the variety of its landscapes, from open savannah to steep gorges, rolling valleys and sweeping plains, spectacular ridge top views of the Great Rift Valley, endless vistas of hills covered in wild sage and thorn trees. The variety of plants, animals and terrain that you can walk among will take your breath away The Forest of Enghelesha is the only indigenous and protected forest remaining in Laikipia, home to the last surviving troupes of the rare and endangered Colobus monkey, as well as over 400 species of birds and many rare and exotic plants. There is also a spacious main living area with fireplace and breakfast verandah perched over the verdant hills from which one can hear the waterfall below and the calls of over 400 bird species as well as other animals which happen to pass by the salt-lick in the valley below. For those lazy afternoons, an infinity pool has been created in between the rocks. It is fed by water from our thermal springs below and has breathtaking views across the Mukutan gorge. The unique setting, the silence and the evocative sounds of Africa, make the Mukutan Retreat an exclusive hideaway for discriminate travellers who wish to find a total communion with nature in simple yet sophisticated comfort. “As the sun sets over the gorge, rhino, elephants, buffalo and bushbuck come to take the waters… Despite their apparent primitivism, the rondavels unfold as a contemporary African retreat, both spartan and sybaritic. Charcoal made from wild sage bush is used to heat water from a raised stone tub that overlooks the landscape… Throughout the rondavels, contemporary craftwork mixes with antique Swahili and Lamu carvings. Curved stone banquettes are cushioned with striped pillows inspired by the kikoi, a loose garment worn by men. An old Lamu rosewood cabinet now serves as a bar. There are also West African fertility sculptures, Turkana baskets, antique cane chairs and 1920s leather.” Conde Nast Architectural Digest “The gorge is a refuge for the endangered black rhino, which graze on the candelabra trees there. Sveva, Kuki’s daughter, takes me to visit Maji ya Nyoka, Water of the Snake, the hot springs deep at the heart of the gorge. The lower we descend, the more jungle-like the vegetation becomes… A waterfall cascades down the rocks into a murky green pool, the vast rock face framed by strangler-fig trees and palms through which the last rays of sunlight struggle to force their way. The scene is like the gateway to a lost kingdom or paradise. Multicoloured butterflies dance in and out of the shadows as Sveva swims in the water. “ Tatler, Sep 1999 FOOD From fresh, organic ingredients all locally grown on the ranch, and fish form our lakes, guests will have a choice of famous Italian cuisine and Indian /chinese spicy vegetarian and evocative food prepared by our trained chefs.
