Camp description: Governors’ Ilmoran is for those who want that extra bit of luxury. The camp comprises just 10 tents situated along the banks of the Mara River.

This exclusive camp was formerly known as Paradise Camp and originally had 20 tents.

The owner’s decision to reduce the size of the new camp is in direct response to their desire to preserve the surroundings and make a contribution to reduce the impact of tourists on the environment. This is probably the first time in the Mara that this has happened.

Ilmoran is hidden in the shadow of ancient trees.

The camp recreates the atmosphere of the original hunting camps.

Each room is furnished to a superior standard. The beds have been hand carved from specially selected wood from fallen, ancient olive trees.

The interior of each tent also includes a Victorian style bath, flush toilet and double basins.

Each tent has a large, extended verandah designed so you can take dinner in private at your tent if you wish.

You will be the personal guest of manager, Patrick, who has a wealth of experience of the African bush.

Game drives and game walks are included in the rate and complimentary wine is served with dinner.

During the day, meals are served outdoors amongst the trees. For breakfast there are fresh fruits, cereals and hot-baked breads together with a full, cooked breakfast prepared before your eyes.

For lunch, a buffet that will satisfy the hungriest appetites. In the evening guests can enjoy cordon-bleu dinners by candlelight, deep in the bush.

Governors’ Camp is situated on the banks of the Mara River in the west of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Created in 1972, it set new standards in luxury as a tented camp, putting particular emphasis on comfort and service, complimented by the sort of good food, which would have been impossible in the bygone days of the grand safari. Maintaining these unique qualities as a tradition, the camp has been refined and improved through the years.

We have taken special care to preserve an atmosphere in which today’s traveller can share the same elemental landscape that inspired Hemingway and magnetised adventurers the world over. The site and size of a safari camp is critical to its vitality.

Governors’ Camp, with its 37 tents set amongst the trees along the Mara river, also has unrivalled views over the plains and is visited and re-visited by guests who find its continued excellence, personal style and family feeling quietly reassuring.

Facilities

All guest facilities are under canvas and keep the authentic, traditional safari atmosphere. All guest tents have en-suite bathrooms with shower and basin, running cold and hot water as well as a flush toilet. Gas and paraffin lamps are used for lighting.

Our privately located Justus Suite is perfect for honeymoon couples, as is tent 37 which has incredible views over the Mara plains and its wildlife.

The dining tent, our campfire and the bar tent are the centre of the camp. Next to the reception is a small souvenir shop. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style, alfresco. Dinner is served in the dining tent. For dinner the menu offers a choice of four courses, including a choice of main courses.

A traditional campfire is lit at sunset every evening and after dinner clients enjoy sitting around the campfire, reminiscing about their safari in its evocative light.

The site was also home to Penny the leopard, the heroine of her last book. The 10 chic canvas bedrooms have breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. Elsa’s Kopje is named after Elsa the lioness, made famous by George and Joy Adamson’s biographical book and film “Born Free”. Elsa’s Kopje remains one of the most elegant lodges in Africa, with one of the most spectacular settings.

Three large traditional dwellings patterned after native African rondavels arranged around a central fireplace provide private and luxurious living for up to 6 people. Each hut offers luxurious accommodations with a double bed (some rooms have 2), a fireplace, a private veranda overlooking the cliffs and a bathroom with sunken baths and handmade pottery basins. Each is built of local stone, papyrus cedar and olive woods.
